SOUTH GATE, Los Angeles County — South Gate’s municipal Get Around Town Express (GATE) service offers local bus trips for a listed regular fare of 50 cents, according to the city’s current transit information.

Who can ride free?

The city lists exemptions for children younger than five, eligible students, college and vocational students and workers with valid identification under its program rules. The student waiver is specifically limited to school hours. Phone-A-Ride participants are also listed as eligible for a free trip.

Because free-ride categories have different eligibility conditions, passengers should read the city rules and show appropriate identification when asked. Visitors should not assume all students can travel free at all hours.

When does the service run?

The city lists GATE operating hours of Monday–Friday, 6 a.m.–7 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., with a published approximate 18–25-minute wait between buses that can vary in traffic. The Eastside and Westside loops stop near locations such as City Hall, South Gate Park, the ELAC South Gate campus and shopping areas.

What about holidays?

GATE does not operate on several holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Call the transit office at (323) 563-5754 or check the route maps for current stops, service advisories and fare eligibility before traveling.
